By: Pedro Martin Published:2023 Awards: Newbury Honor Award Grade:4th+

If a captivating graphic novel memoir that blends humor, adventure, and cultural explorationis what you are looking for stop here. "Mexikid" certainly not something I would say aloud at first, once you've read this comic style it is comprehensible to the senses, The story follows Pedro, a young Mexican-American boy, on a chaotic yet heartwarming road trip to bring his legendary Abuelito (grandfather) home from Mexico. Through Pedro's narration and Martin's expressive illustrations, "Mexikid" offers a delightful coming-of-age story that celebrates family bonds, cultural heritage, and the importance of finding your own voice.

Martin's art style is a vibrant blend of cartoony and realistic elements. Exaggerated expressions and humorous character designs perfectly capture the comedic moments of the story. However, the illustrations also showcase genuine tenderness, particularly when depicting the bond between Pedro and his Abuelito (Grandfather). The use of flashbacks, distinguished by a shift in color palette, adds depth to the narrative, allowing readers to glimpse into Abuelito's past and understand his significance in Pedro's life.

The narrative itself is a delightful blend of humor and heart. Pedro's internal monologues and observations provide laugh-out-loud moments, especially as he navigates the oddities of family road trips and the cultural differences between his American life and his Mexican heritage. However, beneath the humor lies a deeper exploration of identity. Pedro grapples with the expectations placed upon him as a "Mexikid" and longs to carve his own path. His interactions with his strong-willed Abuelito, a former Mexican Revolution fighter, challenge his perceptions of masculinity and family traditions.

"Mexikid" excels in its portrayal of a complex and loving family dynamic. While the journey is filled with bickering siblings, car troubles, and unexpected detours, it ultimately highlights the strength and support a family can offer. Pedro learns valuable lessons about resilience, cultural pride, and the importance of honoring his family's history. The ending is particularly heartwarming, leaving readers with a sense of hope and a newfound appreciation for the bond between generations.

"Mexikid" is a graphic novel that deserves a place on any bookshelf. It's a perfect read for elementary to middle graders who enjoy humor, adventure, and stories about family. Martin's masterful storytelling and engaging artwork create a unique and unforgettable experience. Whether you're looking for a good laugh or a deeper exploration of cultural identity, "Mexikid" delivers on all fronts.
