Jerry Craft's "New Kid" is a captivating graphic novel that tackles the universal challenges of starting at a new school. Though it is for an audience transitioning I believe that this is great for students transitioning from elementary to middle. Through the relatable protagonist, Jordan Banks, the story not only entertains but also equips fifth graders transitioning to middle school with valuable tools for navigating a new and often intimidating environment. Craft's masterful use of color, humor, and genuine portrayal of adolescent emotions make "New Kid" a must-read for this age group.

The color palette in "New Kid" is a powerful storytelling device. Warm colors dominate scenes where Jordan feels comfortable, like spending time with his supportive family. Conversely, cooler tones and more muted backgrounds highlight moments of isolation and anxiety, effectively mirroring Jordan's emotional state. Craft's illustrations also showcase Jordan's artistic talent, expressed through vibrant and imaginative drawings that offer a window into his inner world.

First , there is a humorous tone of the story that offers a welcome counterpoint to the anxieties of starting over. Jordan's internal monologues and witty observations provide  certain comedic relief that kids this age would understand, allowing readers to connect with his experiences and laugh alongside him. While reading, the humor never overshadows the more serious themes of adjusting to a new environment, dealing with microaggressions, and forging new friendships, something that students of all ages will experience.

Moreover, readers would be impressed how "New Kid" excels in its realistic portrayal of the social dynamics, such as cliques, and challenges faced by middle schoolers. The subtle nuisances provide great opportunity for discussion for children of expectation of the next level.  The protagonist, Jordan navigates issues like navigating cliques, dealing with insensitive classmates, and finding his place within the school community. These experiences resonate deeply with fifth graders on the cusp of this new social landscape. The graphic novel provides a safe space for them to explore these anxieties and find comfort in knowing they're not alone.

Overall, "New Kid" by Jerry Craft is an exceptional graphic novel perfectly suited for fifth graders about to embark on their middle school journeys. It offers a relatable protagonist, a humorous yet honest portrayal of the transition process, and valuable lessons about self-acceptance, navigating friendships, and celebrating diversity. With its engaging visuals and compelling narrative, "New Kid" provides not just entertainment but also a roadmap for navigating the exciting complexities of middle school.
