This Day in June

By:Gayle E. Pitman Ill: Kristyna Litten Published: 2014 Awards: Stonewall Book Award Grades: K- 4th

It's Pride everyday for some families and this is a book just it. "This Day in June" story follows a young child experiencing the excitement of a pride parade for the first time. Through rhythmic couplets and Kristyna Litten's expressive illustrations, the book showcases the joy, inclusivity, and positive energy that permeates these events.

Litten's illustrations play a crucial role in displaying the message of acceptance. A diverse range of families, couples, and individuals of all ages and backgrounds fill the pages. They wear a rainbow of colors, representing the LGBTQ+ community's diversity and celebrating individuality. The smiles on everyone's faces and the festive atmosphere create a sense of joy and belonging, making the parade a celebration of love and self-expression.

The reinforcement message of acceptance with simple yet powerful statements. Lines like "We see families, hand in hand," and "Some wear feathers, some wear beads," celebrate differences and normalize the diverse makeup of the LGBTQ+ community. By presenting the parade as a joyous and inclusive event, the book subtly teaches acceptance and understanding for young readers.

"This Day in June" offers a valuable tool for initiating conversations about diversity and family structures. It provides a safe space for young children to explore these concepts without judgment and fosters a sense of empathy and respect for others. The book's positive portrayal of the LGBTQ+ community can be a powerful resource for children with LGBTQ+ parents or family members, allowing them to see their families reflected in a positive and celebratory light.

My library supports and serve LGBTQ+ families, "This Day in June" is a vital addition to my collection. It offers a welcoming and inclusive space for all children, fostering acceptance and understanding not only for young readers but also for their parents and caregivers. The book's positive message aligns perfectly with my librarian manifesto of commitment to diversity and representation, making it a valuable resource for any community.
