Too Much! An Overwhelming Day

By: Jolene Gutierrez Published: 2023 Genre: Children Literature/ Fiction Grades: K-4th

Gutiérrez's "Too Much! An Overwhelming Day," illustrated by Angel Chang, is a beautifully crafted picture book that tackles a crucial topic – sensory overload in children. I only wish more adults would grapple the different nuiassiance of how overstimulation can affect the day of a child. Through a delightful cacophony of words and Chang's stunning illustrations, the story not only resonates with children experiencing sensory sensitivities but also equips young readers with valuable coping mechanisms for overwhelming situations.

The text itself is a clever symphony of sounds and descriptions. Gutiérrez masterfully employs onomatopoeia "Beep beep! Honk honk!" and rhyming couplets "Too scratchy tag, / My shirt's a drag!" to accurately capture the overwhelmingbombardement of sensory information a child might experience. This approach pulls the reader directly into the protagonist's world, allowing them to empathize with the sensory overload.

However, "Too Much!" doesn't simply dwell on the challenges. Chang's illustrations perfectly complement the narrative. Bold, swirling colors and textures depict the overwhelming moments, while calmer, delicate scenes utilize softer hues and smoother lines. This visual contrast effectively communicates the emotional journey of the child and the calming strategies employed.

The book beautifully showcases simple yet powerful coping mechanisms. We see the protagonist taking a deep breath, seeking solace in a quiet space, and finding comfort in the familiar touch of a favorite shirt. These strategies are presented in a clear and actionable manner, offering a valuable toolkit for young readers experiencing similar sensory overload.

Gutiérrez's own experience with sensory processing disorder lends an authenticity to the story. The included author's note further enriches the text by providing valuable information for caregivers and educators. It delves into sensory systems, processing issues, and specific ways to support children with overstimulated nervous systems. This additional resource empowers adults to recognize and address sensory overload in children, fostering a more supportive environment.

In conclusion, "Too Much!" is a remarkable picture book that tackles a significant yet often under-represented topic. Through its creative use of language, stunning illustrations, and practical coping mechanisms, the book empowers both children experiencing sensory overload and the adults who care for them. It's a reassuring and heartwarming read that teaches young readers it's perfectly okay to say "too much" and offers helpful strategies for navigating overwhelming situations.
